Indian literature refers to the literature produced on the Indian subcontinent until 1947 and in the Republic of India thereafter. The Republic of India has 22 officially recognized languages. The earliest works of Indian literature were orally transmitted

Bhartendu Harishchandra is known as Father of Indian Literature. The development of Indian literature started after the 1947. Previously there were oral transmission , manuscripts etc. The most important reason behind the development of this literature is because of the Sanskrit Language

By using parts of the two original epics classical epics were made. The value of truth and the importance of self-sacrifice was the highlight of epics. Because of the important discourses and teaching included the Hindus, epics have many moral teachings and are sacred writing.

Indian literature is the literature written by the writers living in India and in Indian languages whereas the literature written by the writers living through out the World and in foreign languages would be called foreign literature for Indians.

The literature written by the writers belonging to India but living in other countries outside India is called Diaspora literature.
