Panchsheel includes the following five principles of foreign policy: Mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Non-aggression against each other. Non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

After independence, Jawaharlal Nehru gave primacy to the larger foreign policy goals. He abolished the Ministry for Overseas Indian Affairs in 1947. Anti colonialism and Non Alignment became major pillars of India's foreign policy.
