Explain international date line
Answers
Answer:
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line that demarcates the change of one calendar day to the next.
Facts about the IDL:-
Type of line:- Longitude
Degrees:- 180°W
Passes Through:- Bering Strait which separates Asia and North America
What happens when you cross the IDL:-
While going east to west, we will subtract a day and while going from west to east, we will add a day.
For ex:- It is 12 September and you are in the Eastern Hemisphere. If you cross the IDL, the date you will observe will be 11 September. But if you are in the Western Hemisphere and the date is 12 September, after crossing the IDL, the date you will observe will be 13 September.
Why the IDL is not straight:-
When you look at a map, you will notice that the IDL is a zigzag line instead of a straight line. This is so because if the line were straight, it would be passing through an island. And if this line were to pass through a land mass, it would mean that that place/island/country would observe two dates on a single day causing confusion among the citizens of that place.
Hope it helps
