A Great Interpreter Is An Empathetic Listener.
Answer:
I think being an interpreter requires the following:
Having an expansive and relevant range of vocabulary - and by relevant I mean the vocabulary that you will be using when interpreting for two chefs would be different from when you are interpreting for two business men.
Having a good understanding of the cultures of the two languages that you are interpreting to and from. For example, there are many phrases and idioms in a language that is culturally relevant - without this knowledge, it might be difficult for you to correctly interpret the underlying message.
Hard work. It is easy for certain notions to be lost when a phrase is translated from one language to another if the interpreter is lazy and does not make the extra effort for this notion to be received. This has happened many times in my early experience and most of the time it completely changes the direction of the conversation.
