Ions are atoms or groups of atoms bearing an electrical charge, such as the sodium and chlorine atoms in a salt solution. An ion is an atom or molecule with a net electrical charge. The charge of an electron is considered to be negative by convention and this charge is equal and opposite to the charge of a proton, which is considered to be positive by convention. The main ions/ electrolytes include sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These five nutritional elements are minerals, and when minerals dissolve in water they separate into positive and negative ions.
