Explain jhum cultivation
- Jhum cultivation is a traditional farming method where first the land of trees and other vegetation is cleared, burned and then cultivated for a limited number of years. Jhum cultivation is also known as shifting cultivation and slash and burn cultivation. It is one of the oldest systems of cultivation.
The problem in practicing jhum cultivation.
- The government and scientific establishment has long considered jhum to be destructive to the environment due to the removal and subsequent burning of vegetative cover from the selected jhum area. Increased air pollution, soil erosion and landslides have been attributed to jhum.
