When ottoman turkey was defeated, the emperor was rumoured to be imposed a harsh treaty. To defend the emperor a committe was formed, the khilafat committe. Gandhi ji saw thus as a great oppurtunity to bring the hindus and muslims under one umbrella and unit the indians.
