Lets start with basics,

What is energy?

You call energy as something which helps you to do work.For example,Suppose u woke up late,and went to school without breakfast.What will you feel?.Tired,hungry or don't want to do any work(listening lecture,writing..etc.).Now think the this situation in opposite way(you had breakfast).What will you feel now.Energetic?yes obviously.The breakfast you had gave you the energy.Now you will be more tending to do work.

What is kinetic energy?

I'll give you an example before telling what is kinetic energy.Consider a bowler(cricket) bowling at some high speed.Now question yourself,what was the reason that ball started moving at such a high speed?.You might be thinking,bowler threw the ball!!.You are absolutely correct.But what made to gain that speed(velocity).Energy, yes absolutely.The energy from the bowler was transferred to the ball(by now you might be knowing where the bowler energy got from).There is a very famous principle:

"Energy can neither be created nor destroyed,but it can be converted from one form to other".

If you are exactly following me,you would observe that this principle is actually applicable in previous example.

Now think for a while,how first example is different from the Second one.In the first one we gained energy to do work.In the Second case,ball gained energy to gain the speed.

Now you can easily understand,

"Kinetic energy can be defined as the energy possessed by a moving body"
