The use of land depends on physical factors such as topography, climate as well as human factors such as population density.

The total geographical area of India is 3.28 million square km.

The land use data is there is only present for 93 percent of this area because the land use reporting is not done for the north Eastern states except Assam.

Also some areas of Jammu and Kashmir have not been surveyed because those are occupied by China and Pakistan.

The land under forest area has not increased than it should have been which may be due to deforestation and other human activities.
