According to this law,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Factors Of different characters assort ( segregate ) independent of each other during gametogenesis ( gamete formation ) and fuse randomly to form next generation."Explanation : New combinations [ Yellow round and green wrinkled ] were produced only if the factors of yellow and round character separated independent ( without influencing ) of each other. Similarly, the factors of green and wrinkled characters are separated during gamete formation. They are rearranged randomly during fertilization and produce new combinations.

Law of independent assortment :

This was one of the Law of Mendel based on dihybrid cross of pea plant taking in account the colour and shape of the pea seeds .

According to this law , the factors or alleles of two different characters separate independently at the time of gamete formation and rearrange in the offspring at the time of fertilisation .

It was based on inheritance of two genes .

For example in dihybrid cross , he took two types of seeds RRYY (Round and yellow ) and rryy ( wrinkled and green) .

At the time of gamete formation , four combinations will be obtained namely RY , Ry , rY and ry . When the fertilisation takes place , these characters rearrange themselves according to the Punnet square shown above.

The phenotypic ratio obtained in dihybrid cross was 9:3:3:1 .
