- Many layers of air are present in the atmosphere . Scientists have divided the atmosphere into four layers . These are :
- It gets its name from the Greek word tropos which means " a turn ". This is because the air there is constantly circulating .
- The troposphere is the layer of of the atmosphere nearest to the Earth's Surface . As well as a mixture of gases , this layer contains cloud's , dust and pollution .
- It extends to between 10 km ( 6 miles ) and 20 km ( 12 miles ) from the Earth .
- The Troposphere is the layer where the weather is produced .
- The upper limit of the Stratosphere is around 50 km ( 30 miles ) from Earth's surface .
- When you fly in a plane , you fly in this layer , just above the clouds .
- The stratosphere contains a concentration of ozone gas . This gases the Stratosphere to heat up .
- This layer of ozone gas is very important , as it helps to shield the Earth from harmful rays , which can cause skin cancer and damage to the eyes .
- The mesosphere reaches a height of around 80 km ( 50 miles )
- Temperatures here are the coolest in the atmosphere because the mesosphere contains no ozone , dust or clouds , which absorb energy from the sun .
- It is hottest at the bottom due to the warmer Stratosphere layer below.
- Temperature in the Thermosphere can be extemely high , reaching up to 1,500°C .
- This is because there is a high proportion of gas called atomic oxygen .
- This absorbs ultraviolet rays from the Sun in the same way that ozone does.
