Light year is the unit of measurement of distance that we use in space. Since every object in space are very far away from each other, we cannot use kilometers or miles to define the distance, because the value that we would end up with will be too much bigger and it will be little inconvenient for us to understand it. Just like how we use nautical miles in sea, we use light year in space!
Light year is simply the distance that is travelled by the light in a time period of about one year!
The object that you are referring in your question could be reached in a time period of about 300 years only if we travel at the speed of light which is about 3,00,000 km/s.
So, if you wanted to specify the distance in conventional manner, the distance travelled by the light in one year would be about
9460800000000 km.
For 300 years, it would be
2838240000000000 km.
All these numericals would surely cause inconvenience to us, in order to spare us from them, we started to use light year as a unit for measuring distance, only in space! In short, lets be a smart worker by saying 300 light years far away instead of being a hard worker by saying 2838240000000000 km far away.
You might wonder why the distance between the Sun and the Earth or the distance between the Earth and the Moon is not specified in light years, the reason is, light takes only about 8 minutes to reach the Earth from the Sun. In this case, its going to be hard to make someone realise the light year value in decimals. We need to be hard worker sometimes in order to prevent being the hardest worker so that we save ourself from getting exhausted!

Hope it help.

The light year is a way of measuring distance.
What Doesn't Make mass sentence "light year" contains the world "year" ,which is normally a unit of time. Even so, light year measure distance.
