Latitudes - these are the lines which are parallel to the equator. they are also known as Parallels of latitude .their ljnes goes in decreasing as we go away from the equator , towards the poles . the equator which is 0 degree latitude is the biggest latitude . some more important lines of latitudes are : Tropic of cancer , tropic of capricorn , Arctic circle , antarctic circle ..

longitudes - these are the lines that run from north pole to south pole of equal lengths . there are total 360 lines of longitude. they are also known as meridians . the line of longitude which passes through Greenwich near london in UK is the prime meridian. the base line has 0 degree longitude and from it we count 180 degree eastward and 180 degree westward. longitude to the east of Greenwich is called East longitude (E) and those to the west are called west longitude (W) .
