Macronutrients-
- Macronutrients are nutrients that are needed in large quantities to maintain normal body function and carry out activities of daily life.
- The three major macronutrients are- carbohydrates, protein, and fats.
Carbohydrate-
- The recommended dietary allowance for adults and children are 130 grams.
- The normal Macronutrient Distribution Range for carbohydrates is 45-65%.
- Carbohydrates are used as fuel by the body to produce energy. Glucose is the primary source of fuel for the nervous system and body cells. The extra glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscle.
- Sources of carbohydrates are- Banana, oats, legumes, whole grains, etc.
Protein -
- Protein is one of the important macronutrients which are also known as building blocks of the body.
- Protein is made up of long chains of amino acids. These play important role in the growth, repair, and development of body tissues.
- There are 20 types of amino acids out of which 9 are called essential amino acids as they cannot be synthesized by the body and should be included in the diet.
- Protein functions as enzymes, hormones, and antibodies, maintaining acid-base balance in the blood,
- Recommended dietary allowance(RDA) for protein for adults is 0.8/kg of body weight.
- Sources of protein are- Egg, lentils, milk, chickpeas, etc.
Fat-
- One of the main functions of fat is to work As an energy reserve in the body.
- Fats provide essential fatty acids which are important constituents of the cell membrane, work as Chemical regulators that affect inflammation, blood clotting
- The Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR) for fat is 20-35%
- Source of unsaturated fat- Fish, nuts, beef, etc.
