Under the Mahalwari system, the land revenue was collected from the farmers by the village headmen on behalf of the whole village. Under the Ryotwari system, the land revenue was paid by the farmers directly to the state. Zamindari system was started by the Imperialist East India Company in 1793.

Mahalwari System :- In Western Uttar Pradesh, a settlement was made with the village communities which maintained a form of common ownership known as Bhaichara, or with Mahals which were groups of villages. Hence , it came to be known as the Mahalwari system.
Ryotwari System :- This was a system of land revenue introduced in the Madras Presidency. Under this system revenue assessment and collection was made directly between the British and the India peasant.
