A virus is a software that aims to alter the normal functioning of the computer, without the permission or knowledge of the user. Viruses, usually replace files executable by others infected with the code of this. Viruses can destroy, intentionally, the data stored in a computer, although there are also other more harmless, which only cause discomfort.

Computer viruses basically have the function of propagating through software, they are very harmful and some also contain a harmful load (payload) with different objectives, from a simple joke to major damage to the systems, or block the computer networks generating useless traffic. The operation of a computer virus is conceptually simple. A program that is infected is executed, in most of the cases, due to the user's lack of knowledge. The virus code remains resident (hosted) in the computer's RAM, even when the program that contained it has finished executing. The virus then takes control of the basic services of the operating system, infecting, later, executable files that are called for execution. Finally, the virus code is added to the infected program and recorded on the disk, which completes the replication process.
