explain Mara's commitment in protecting the lake?

When mara found that the goddess wanted to destroy the entire kingdom by over flowing the river veda, he was totally disturbed. He pleaded goddess to spare the kingdom. This act of mara saved the lake as well as the kingdom because, the goddess had to keep her promise until mara returns.
