Projectile motion or any kind of motion is not split into n number of components by innate character. We just do it to make our psychotherapy easy. We can analyses  projectile motion (or rotational motion) without splitting it into horizontal or vertical components( tangential and radial components) but it is just a lot harder.

That being said I believe you are confused with the effect of applied might on the body. The practical force not only provides acceleration for the level shift but also for the vertical motion. To comprehend this divide the applied force itself into two parts. The vertical part provides for lift against enormity like throwing a ball perpendicularly up and the horizontal part provides the horizontal acceleration
