Heredity is the phenomenon of passing traits from parent to offspring. It is also called as mechanism of inheritance.
Inheritance involves the transfer of characters from one generation to another generation. Basic features of inheritance are elucidated.
*The traits could be hidden in many generations but can reappear in any generation unchanged.
*Traits which remain together may get separated in the next generation.
*One form of a particular character is exhibited frequently than the other form of the same character.

The transmission of characteristics or traits from one generation to another ( from parents to offspring ) is known as inheritance or hereditary .
》》MECHANISM OF INHERITANCE :
■If both parents help to determine the trait in the progeny , both parents must be contributing a copy of the same gene.
■Thus , each pea plant must have two sets of all genes , one inherited from each parent , So , each germ cell must have only one gene set .
■Each set of gene is not present as single thread of DNA , but as separate independent pieces called chromosomes and each cell will have two copies of each chromosome , one inherited from each parent , i.e. one from male parent and one from female parent.
■When to germ cells combine , they will restore the normal number of chromosomes in the progeny , ensuring the stability of the DNA of species.
