Mechanism of the pendulum :
Explanation:
- A simple pendulum is a small metal ball or piece of stone suspended from a rigid base on a string as shown in Figure (a).
- A metal ball is attached to a pendulum called a bob.
- Figure (a) shows the stationary pendulum in its middle position.
- When the swing of the pendulum is released after being tilted slightly to the side, it begins to move back and forth [figure(b)].
- The forward and backward motion of a straight pendulum is an example of a periodic or oscillating motion.
- The pendulum is said to swing once when its drum, starting from the middle position O, moves to A, to B, and back to O.
- The pendulum also makes one movement when its stick moves from one extreme position A to another extreme position of B and returns to A.
- When the bob is dragged from the center position to one side and then released, the pendulum is set in motion.
- The bob alternately moves to both sides of its center position.
