The reaction begins with the homolysis of Chlorine atom to form chlorine free radicals.(Initiation). Then the chlorine free radicals attack methane to form methane radical and HCl. The methane radical further reacts with another chlorine atom to form methyl chloride and a new chlorine free radical and this process continues. (Propagation).

The reaction stops only when two radicals react together.(Termination)
