Mendeleev in 1869 arranged the elements in increasing order of their atomic masses so that the elements with similar properties occur at regular intervals.

he stated that the properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.

this method was also discarded as it could not justify the position of certain elements and isotopes.
