In the poem ‘Menelaus and Helen’ Rupert Brooke has summarized the romantic love episode in classical literature, namely the abduction of Helen by Paris and son of Priam who was the king of Troy. It resulted the Trojan War which was fought between the Greeks and the Trojans. In the end of the war the Trojans were defeated and Menelaus took his wife back to Sparta.
The description of Menelaus entering to Helen’s chamber is very realistic. We can compare Menelaus with perfect knight and Helen with perfect queen is a good example for the figure of speech called simile. It also helps us to remember that Helen was still young and beautiful. The symptoms of old age mentioned in the end of the poem are the facts. It is the evidence of the young poet’s observation of real life.
