splitting cell means dividing the selected cells into  a separate cell .to a split cell ,follow the steps:

1. select the cell that you want to split

2. click on the layout tab

3. select the split cell button in the merge cell group

4. the split cell dialog box appears

5. define the number of the rows and columns, in the respective spin boxes , into which you wish to split the selected cell, click ok
