Explain mitochondria and its functions ?
Answers
These are rod-shaped structures present in the cytoplasm of all the eukaryotes
except mammalian RBCs. These are also absent in prokaryotes. The outer membrane is very porous while the inner membrane is produced into finger-like processes called cristae. Mitochondria are called power-house or power
plant or storage batteries as these are sites of synthesis of energy rich ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecules by cellular respiration. Mitochondria are self-replicating organelles. They contain DNA, RNA and ribosomes to carry out protein synthesis. Mitochondria are the largest organelles in animals cells.
Functions of Mitochondria:
1. Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respirat
2. They provide energy (in the form of ATP) for
3. Mitochondria are able to make some of thei Semiautonomous organelles.
4. They provide intermediates for synthesis of various chemicals like fatty acid, steroids, amino acid, etc.
