A chemical substance which is released at the end of the nerve fibre by the arrival nerve impulse and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, effects the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fibre, a muscle or some other structure..

Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse or junction from one neuron to another "target" neuron, muscle cells and gland cells.
