a chemical substance which is released at the end of a nerve fibre by the arrival of a nerve impulse and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, effects the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fibre, a muscle fibre, or some other structure.

at synapse the electrical impulse generated at dendrite of a neuron is passed on to dendrite of another neuron by axon ending of the first neuron or it is passed on to a muscle or gland to act as ordered by or spinal cord this transmission at synapse is carried out by chemicals known as neurotransmitters
