1. CHENNAI: A Presidency College student was arrested on Tuesday for trying to steal four mobile phones from Law College students near Anna Square.
Police said Ashok approached the law college students chatting at the park near the Marina swimming pool and asked one of them to give him a mobile phone as he wanted to inform a relative about his nephew who was admitted to Government General hospital. Believing him, the student, Thiagu, gave Ashok his phone.
2. Waves of up to 1 meter have hit parts of Japan's coast following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake near Miyagi prefecture.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning for Japan on Saturday after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi prefecture.
Tsunami waves of up to 1 meter (3.2 feet) hit land shortly after the earthquake, local television channel NHK reported.

5. Balasore: A man has been sentenced to ten years` rigorous imprisonment by a local court for the death of his wife, who was torutered for years for failing to bring a TV set and motorbike in dowry.
Additional District Judge (Fast Track), Balasore, RK Sahu convicted Karunakar Jena of Garadipatana village yesterday and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.
Jena had repeatedly tortured his wife Subhadra since their marriage in 2004 for failing to meet his dowry demands.
On May 28, 2007 Subhadra`s body was found hanging from a tree. A case was registered by the police the next day following a complaint by the woman`s father.
6. Kathmandu: A 5.8-magnitute earthquake struck Nepal‘s western Lamjung district on Wednesday, injuring at least six persons and damaging dozens of houses, officials said.
The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 5:42 AM (05:27 IST), was located at Marshyangdi Rural Municipality of the district, 200 km west of Kathmandu.
The 5.8-magnitude quake damaged around two dozen houses and left six people injured, The Kathmandu Post reported.
7. The Office of the Defence Minister in a tweet said that Rajnath Singh was received by Major General Kosenko Vasily Alexandrovich and Indian Ambassador to Russia Dr B Venkatesh Varma.
During the visit, Mr Singh will hold talks on ways to further deepen the India-Russia defence and strategic partnership. He will also attend the 75th Victory Day Parade in Moscow.
The Victory Parade will be held tomorrow to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the victory in the Second World War.
The Parade is organized to honour the heroism and sacrifices made by the Russian and other friendly people.
Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu had invited Mr Singh to the Victory Parade, which was originally scheduled on the 9th of May but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Separately, a 75- Member Tri-Service Indian Military Contingent has already reached Moscow to participate in the Victory Parade along with Russian contingent and other invited contingents.
