In the Nij system, the planter planted indigo in tracts of land that he directly owned. While in the Ryoti system, the planters would force the peasants, also known as the ryots, to cultivate indigo on their farms

Nij Cultivation: In this system, the planter produced indigo on those lands which were under his direct control. The planter either bought the land or rented it from other zamindars. He directly employed labourers to produce indigo.

Ryoti system was a system in which cultivators of ryoti were forced to sign an agreement called satta and were given loan at a cheaper interest rate to grow indigo.
