ANSWER:

Nij system or Nij cultivation was one of the main systems of indigo cultivation.

EXPLANATION:

Under the Nij system planters produced indigo on lands that were under their control. Planters either purchased the land or leased it from other zamindars. Planters directly hired workers to produce indigo. However there were some issue with this cultivation. Indigo was cultivated only on fertile lands; however most of the areas were densely inhabited and therefore, only small plots were available for cultivating indigo.

This made it problematic to multiply the area under Nij cultivation. For convenience sake planters tried to lease lands around the indigo factories. In doing so, they had evicted several peasants from those areas. The eviction of peasants created tension and conflict. A large plantation needed numerous workers, and work at indigo plantation overlapped with the time when peasants were busy with other cultivation such as rice.

Hence, mobilising the workers for cultivation of indigo was a challenging task. Vast-scale Nij cultivation also needed several bullocks and ploughs. It was a major problem to seed husk and conserve the ploughs. Since the peasants’ bullocks and ploughs were busy in cultivation of rice, it was impossible to lease from them for Nij cultivation.

Till the late 19th century, planters were not ready to extend the area under Nij cultivation; owing to the above mentioned problems. Hence, less than 25 percent of the indigo cultivation was carried out under Nij cultivation.
