“Nitrogen Cycle is a biogeochemical process which transforms the inert nitrogen present in the atmosphere to a more usable form for living organisms.”
What is Nitrogen Cycle?
Nitrogen Cycle is a biogeochemical process through which nitrogen is converted into many forms, consecutively passing from the atmosphere to the soil to organism and back into the atmosphere.It involves several processes such as nitrogen fixation, nitrification, denitrification, decay and putrefaction.
Stages of Nitrogen Cycle
Process of Nitrogen Cycle consists of the following steps –
Nitrogen fixation,
Nitrification,
Assimilation,
Ammonification ,and
Denitrification.
Nitrogen cycle :
The process through which nitrogen is converted to organic substances and the nitrogen is back to nature is called as nitrogen cycle.
❒ There are 5 stages of nitrogen cycle :
- Nitrogen fixation : The process by which nitrogen is converted into ammonia is called as nitrogen fixation.
- Nitrification : The process by which the ammonia is converted into nitrites and then nitrates is called as nitrification.
- Assimilation : The formation of organic compounds like amino acids from inorganic nitrogen compounds is called as assimilation.
- Ammonification : The convertion of organic nitrogen to ammonia with the help of bacterias is known as Ammonification.
- Denitrification : The reduction of nitrate and nitrite compounds in gaseous form of nitrogen is called as dentrification.
