All these events led to the movement against this oppressive system. Farmers in 1949 and 1916 revolted against Indigo cultivation.-The Quit India Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942. The movement demanded the expulsion of British landowners from India. It was the major movement against the British Raj. Many Congress leaders and people belonging to different backgrounds joined the movement.
