Methane is prepared in laboratory by reacting sodium acetate (CH3COONa) with soda lime (mixture of NaOH and CaO) . Heated in a test tube.

Methane is colourless, odourless, tasteless gas.
# Occurrence -
- It is naturally found in sewers, landfills, septic tanks, etc
- It is formed by decomposition of organic materials.
# Preparation -
In laboratory, methane is obtained by heating sodium acetate with soda lime. (CaO acts as catalyst here)
CH3COONa + NaOH + ∆ --> CH4 + Na2CO3
