The octet rule refers to the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell. When atoms have fewer than eight electrons, they tend to react and form more stable compounds.

Octet Rule is tendency of atoms to have eight electrons in their valence orbit, with the exception being hydrogen and helium which have duplet or duet condition. This is followed to attain stability. It was given by Neils Bohr.
