Hey mate !!

Octet rule means have 8 electrons in d outermost shell. In case of NaCl, Sodium has one valence electron more than the stable electronic configuration whereas Chlorine has seven electrons that is one electron less than d stable electronic configuration. So in order to attain stability sodium donates one electron to Chlorine and thus the formation of Sodium Chloride takes place.
