❤️ Octet Rule:
The tendency of an atom to have eight electrons in it's valence shell is known as octet rule.
An atom follows octet rule in order to have stable electronic configuration.
❤️❤️ Limitations :
There are 3 types of violations observed while looking for consistency of octet rule -
1. Presence of odd number of electrons in the valence shell without any formal charge such as in the structure of NO.
2. Incomplete octet as in the case of borane leading to banana bonding.
3. More electrons in valence shell than that dictated by the octet rule such as in PCl5. Phosphorous accommodates the extra electrons by utilizing its d orbitals.
❤️❤️❤️ Significance :
The octet rule is that every atom will STABLISE in the form of complete octet . There are always eight atoms in the outtermost shell to20 number atoms in periodic table.that means to complete its octet oh do bonding with other elements this is the significance of octet rule. And on behalf of octet rule we can determine the ionization enthalpy and other factors which are useful for us.
