WINNOWING

The method of seperating a mixture by using wind or. by blowing air is called winnowing.

This method uses the mass as differentiating property under the action of gravity.

In this process lighter components can be separated from heavier components. The mixture is allowed to fall from height. The heavier component falls almost straight downwards and the lighter component is blown away to form a separate heap at a distance. Eg: Chaff ( a lighter component ) is separated from grain ( a heavier component ) by this method.

CENTRIFUGATION

The method of separating finely suspended solid components in a liquid by spinning mixture in closed container at a very high speed is called centrifugation.

It is carried out in a machine called a centrifuge.

After spinning the mixture in centrifuge, suspended components in the liquid collect at the base of the container, and the liquid is separated by decantation. Eg: used to separate butter from milk. It is also used in laboratories to separate blood and it's components.

The underlying principle of this method is that heavier particles experience larger centrifugal force than the lighter particles.
