Explain one feature each of water and
forests as resources in Africa
Answers
Answer:
Water in Africa is an important issue encompassing the sources, distribution and economic uses of the water resources on the continent. Overall, Africa has about 9% of the world's fresh water resources and 16% of the world's population. There are about 17 rivers in the African continent. Among these rivers are the Congo, Nile, Zambezi, Niger and Lake Victoria, considered the world’s second largest river. Yet the continent is the second driest in the world, with millions of Africans still suffering from water shortages throughout the year. Groundwater is extremely important in Africa. Africans are facing increased water scarcity. Access to clean water and sanitation has been earmarked as the most crucial resource for life and for agriculture and industry.

Forests and trees are important natural resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. Forests and forest products also feature in numerous cultural traditions. They contribute to
human welfare and help protect natural systems. The sustainable use and conservation of these
resources is essential for the region's economic and environmental security.
But Africa is now witnessing a steady decline in forest resources because of wasteful
deforestation. During the 1980s, the region lost 7 percent of its forest cover. Tropical moist
forests in West and Central Africa, in particular, are disappearing at an alarming rate of nearly
2 million hectares each year. The current trend of deforestation has significant social,
economic, and, environmental consequences, with serious local, regional, and global
implications. In the short run, it is the poor who suffer most from loss of forests and trees. But
in the long run, the entire world community and future generations are also affected, as a result
of the loss of biodiversity and environmental services provided by forest ecosystems.
