Ostwald process
manufacturing of nitric acid (HNO3)
equation of reactions :-
1) 4NH3 +5O2 ---->4NO +6H2O
2) O2 +2NO ----> 2 NO2
3) 3NO2 +H2O ------> NO +2HNO3
in this method
ammonia is oxidised by oxygen in the presence of platinum gauze at 800°c to form nitric oxide . it again oxidised into NO2 which when dissolved in water forms nitric acid

HELLO THERE!!

Ostwald Process is the industrial process to prepare nitric acid in industries.

The Process:

First, 1 volume of dry ammonia gas and 10 volumes of dry air is taken.

Note: 10 volumes of air is taken because ammonia is required to react with oxygen, which is only 20% (one fifth) in the air. Hence, the ratio of ammonia:air is 1:10.

The mixture is then heated with Platinum as catalyst, which is heated to a temperature of 800°C. The reaction is strongly exothermic, so the heat evolved during the reaction maintains the temperature (800°C), so heat need not be supplied any more.

Reaction:
4NH₃ + 5O₂ ----Pt----> 4NO + 6H₂O

Then, this nitric oxide evolved is taken to the oxidation chamber where it is oxidized to a reddish brown acidic gas, Nitrogen dioxide, by reacting it with Oxygen.

Reaction:
2NO + O₂ ----> 2NO₂

Now, this Nitrogen dioxide gas is taken to the absorption tower, packed with quartz. Quartz is packed in layers so that the Nitrogen dioxide dissolves uniformly in water.

In this tower, warm water is trickled from the top and in the presence of oxygen, nitrogen dioxide gives nitric acid.

Reaction:
4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ ------> 4HNO₃
