This is an oxidation reaction, we can see that the C which didn't have any Oxygen attached to it, now has become CO. Hence carbon has been oxidised to form CO.

We can understand it as addition of oxygen to an element or loss of hydrogen or loss of electrons.

Oxidising agents : KMnO₄ , H₂SO₄ , HNO₃ etc....
