Particles of matter are in constant motions:

  • Diffusion is a physical process in which the molecules of higher concentration region move to a lower concentration region.
  • The material that aids this diffusion could be of either state of matter- solid, liquid or gas.
  • A common example to show that the particles of matter are in constant motions with the help of diffusion is in our breathing, where oxygen is at a higher concentration inside our arteries and arterioles as compared to the level of oxygen which is actively respiring cells.
  • By the time the blood flows into the capillaries in the muscle, for example, from hepatocytes or skeletal muscle fibres oxygen is separated through a single layer of cells.
  • Through a process called 'passive diffusion', without the active involvement of any other molecule, oxygen is supplied through the capillary membrane and go through the cells.
