Answer:

What is Planck’s Quantum Theory?

Matter radiate energy or absorb energy in discrete quantities discontinuously in the form of small packets or bundles.

The smallest bundle or packet of energy is known as quantum. In case of light, a quantum of light is known as a photon.

The energy of the quantum absorbed or emitted is directly proportional to the frequency of the radiation.

Planck's quantum theory

The electromagnetic theory of radiations given by Maxwell regarded radiant energy as a continuous flow of energy in the form of waves .

According to this theory atoms or molecules could emit or absorb energy only in discrete quantities (small packets) and not in an arbitrary amount .Planck gave the name quantum to the smallest quantity of energy that can be emitted in the form of E.M radiations..

The energy of photon is proportional to its frequency and is given by :- E = hv

  • where H is representing planks constant equals to (6.626 ★10^-34)
  • E stands for the energy
  • v stands for the frequency

This theory ,no doubt , explained certain phenomena associated with light .But at the same time ,it failed to account for a few phenomena . These are listed as follows :-

a) The nature of radiations which are emitted by black body also known as black body radiations.

b) The ejection of electrons from the surface of certain metals when light radiations strike the surface . This is known as photoelectric effect .

c) The spectral lines are emitted by certain elements . These are known as line spectrum and help in the identification of the elements .

Here, we are done wid this theory ✓

Happy learning :)
