the plasma membrane is composed of lipids that are arranged in bilayers. also the lipids are arranged within the membranes with the polar heads towards the outersides and the hydro phobic tails towards the inner part. the lipid component of the membrane is composed mainly of phosphoglycerides. the plasma membrane also contain protein and carbohydrate.

the  plasma membrane is also called as the cytoplasmic membrane.
both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have the vital part -plasma membrane.

*the basic function of the membrane is to protect the cell.it is the one that holds the cell idependently from the environment separately.

*the plasma membrane is selectively permeable.i.e - it only lets a few selected particles to move through it into the cell. that is-it contrls the movement of particles into and out of the cell.it acts like a protective wall.

*it has a phospholipid bilayer  that has proteins embedded on it.

hope it helps!!!
