The benefit of an ideal democracy is representation. If the majority of the people want a certain kind of government, they can have it. Laws exist that benefit the largest groups, and there is a plurality of agreement on who the elected leaders should be.

The downside to this is that when the majority rules, the minority can be oppressed. If we addressed overpopulation by voted that everyone named “Carl” would have to be deported you'd have a situation where +99% of the people would stand to benefit on the oppression of the few.

There is no perfect government. Democracy can beget populism and civil rights abuses. Communism strips individuals of personal incentives. Capitalism centralizes wealth and power within the 1%. Dictatorships breed corruption. Benevolent monarchs can die and be replaced by despots. Even the American republic system with all it's checks and balances can be stymied by leaders who have political incentives that align more to “acquired power” vs. “do the most good for the most people”.
