Prepositions are words that show a relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another in the sentence.

Kinds of Prepositions:

1. Simple Prepositions: These are very commonly used . example: at, by, for, from, in, of,off, on out , over, till, to, with, down.

2. Double Prepositions: These are made up two preposition. example: into, within, without, upon, under.

3. Compound Prepositions: These are made by addition of 'on' and 'by' before a preposition. example: along, beside, across, beyond, towards, inside, outside.

4. Participle Prepositions: The present participle forms of verbs are used as prepositions. example: concerning, regarding, during.

5. Disguised Prepositions: These are used in the hidden form. example: Five o' clock=of clock, once a year=once in a year.

6. Phrase Prepositions: It consists of a preposition followed by a prepositional complement. The complement is usually a noun phrase. example: according to, because of, in the event of, in addition to.

Prepositions help to express the following:

Place: 1. The cat is under the table.

2. The toys are on the table.

Time/Duration: 1. He met his old aunt during his stay in Germany.

2. Rose reaches school at 8 o' clock.

Direction: 1. The mouse ran to the hole.
