Preparation of land should begin early before the rains. Weeds are cut and burnt or left to rot and add fertility to the soil. The land should then be ploughed. Ploughing should be done with a moderate depth dependent on the crop to be planted. By ploughing decayed organic matter is mixes in the soil adding fertility. Micro organisms that are destructive to plants are also killed by exposing them to sunlight

Soil preparation in crop cultivation practice:

  • For cultivating the crop, soil has to be prepared. First, soil is loosen such that roots are deeply embedded in the soil.
  • These loosened soil contains beneficial microorganisms and earthworms which add humus to it.
  • Soil contains minerals and nutrients in it.
  • To grow plants in these soils, and turned and loosened, this process of turning and loosening of soil is called tilling and ploughing respectively.
  • Lastly, water, manure and fertilizers are added to the soil to make it suitable for crop.
