Inspiration:

  • External intercoastal muscles and diaphragm muscles contract.

  • Contraction of these muscles result in increased volume of intra-thoracic cavity due to antero-posterior and supero-inferior expansion.

  • So, the intra-thoracic pressure falls (similar to Boyle's Law) and becomes lesser than the atmospheric air pressure.

  • This pressure difference allows air to flow from atmosphere to the lungs (from high pressure to low pressure).

  • This is the mechanism of inspiration.

Expiration:

  • The external intercoastal muscles and diaphragm relax.

  • This results in decrease in intra-thoracic volume.

  • In turn , the intra-thoracic pressure increases and becomes greater than the atmospheric air pressure.

  • So , air moves from lung (high pressure) to outside (low pressure).

  • Sometimes , forceful expiration is made by contraction of internal intercoastal muscles and abdominal muscle contraction.

  • This is the mechanism of expiration.

Answer:

During expiration, there is a decrease in the volume of the thoracic cavity due to diaphragm being dome-shaped and contraction of the intercostal muscles. This allows the lungs to push the air outside
