While chromosome duplication took place prior to meiosis I, no new chromosome replication occurs before meiosis II.
The centrioles duplicate. This occurs by separation of the two members of the pair, and then the formation of a daughter centriole perpendicular to each original centriole. The two pairs of centrioles separate into two centrosomes.
The nuclear envelope breaks down, and the spindle apparatus forms.

The signicance of Meiosis:

1. Due to this division, the gametes formed are haploid. Hence, meiosis is an important and essential  part of the life history of living beings.

2. During fertilisation, the gametes on fusion form diploid zygote. Thus the original number of  chromosomes in somatic cells is restored.

3. New characters are introduced in the new generation due to crossing over of the genes.

4. Due to changes in parental characters, variations occur, which are necessary for the evolution  process.
