The quit India movement (or bharat chodo andolan or August movement) was a civil disobedience movement launched in Indiain August 1942 in response to Gandhi's call for immediate independence. The all India congress committee proclaimed a mass protest demanding what Gandhi called "an orderly British withdrawal" from India. its aim was to bring the British government to the negotiating table through determined , but passive resistance

Quit India Movement:

  • The Quit India Movement is also known as Bharat Chodo Andolan or the August Movement was launched in 1942, august under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Following the British action of entering India in world war second without India’s consent, there was great indignation in the entire country.
  • In response to this, Gandhi called for the immediate independence of India. The Indian national congress issued a resolution demanding complete swaraj from the British. The aim underlying the act was to bring the British government into negotiation tables and ask for complete independence.
  • Mass civil indicipline was launched when Gandhi asked the fellow country people not to follow any British orders and urged to act as an independent nation. This movement was supported by a huge number of Indians including the opposition. Gandhiji’s famous dialogue ‘Do or Die’ got popularity in the very speech of the movement.
