Rain water harvesting is a technique of collection and storage of rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks, or the infiltration of surface water into subsurface aquifers (before it is lost as surface runoff). One method of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting.

Rainwater harvesting is a simple technique or technology that collects, stores, conveys, and purifies rainwater that runs off of rooftops, parks, highways, open spaces, and other surfaces for later use.

Rainwater harvesting can be done in a variety of methods, including:

  • A watershed is a region where precipitation flows directly into a river or another reservoir.
  • There are two ways to keep water: on the roof or on the ground.
  • Normally, rainwater is collected on the roof tops. The rainwater from the roof is usually collected in PVC pipes and stored in a sump (a deep pit dug into the earth) or a tank.
  • The water in the tank can then be used for home purposes after it has been filtered.
  • Rainwater collection also helps to restore natural aquifers.

Advantages of Rainwater Harvesting

  • Cuts down on the amount of water used.
  • As a result, the need for water is lowered.
  • Imported water isn't needed as much.
  • Encourages the use of less water and energy.
  • Groundwater quality and quantity have both improved.
